Type 2 diabetes

There are about 800.000 people with type 2 diabetes in Austria.

This is a chronic metabolic disorder that results in high blood sugar levels.

In the past, this diabetes was also called "adult onset diabetes," as it mainly affects the people over 40.

However, it is also increasingly affecting younger people - even children and adolescents.

Risk factors for type 2 diabetes

1. Overweight - 80% of Type 2 diabetics are overweight

  • Overweight increases the individual diabetes risk by five to ten times.

2. Genetic predisposition and heredity

  • Children of type 2 diabetics have a risk of 25% to 50%.
  • If both parents are diabetics, the risk increases to approximately 60%.
  • Daughters and granddaughters of those affected are at risk for gestational diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes usually begins insidiously and often coexists with high blood pressure, abdominal obesity, high blood lipid levels or increased uric acid levels. Overweight, obesity and lack of physical activity favour the development.

Also, medications can negatively affect blood sugar, such as systemically administered cortisone, diuretic or antihypertensive drugs, birth control pills or antidepressants. In addition, pregnancy, liver disease, infections, trauma, surgery and hormonal imbalances can promote the development of type 2 diabetes.

How can type 2 diabetes be diagnosed?

Possibilities of diagnosis:

  • The diagnosis of type 2 diabetes is made by a blood test or
  • by determining the blood sugar long-term value HbA1c.

How is type 2 diabetes noticeable?

The most common symptoms:

    - Excessive thirst

    - Frequent urination

    - Dry skin

    - Sudden weight loss

Type 2 diabetes usually develops slowly. Years can go by from the onset of the illness to the time of diagnosis, as elevated blood glucose levels often do not cause ailments for a long time, although blood vessels and nerves have already been damaged.
